I’m an about-to-retire humanities teacher, reader, writer, walker, gardener, tai chi-practicer, equestrian, and doting grandmother. My son is a firefighter in New York City, my brothers and their families live in England (Dorset, Hampshire, and London), and my native-French sister lives between Paris and Tuscany. I live with my daughter, Jessica, and my granddaughter, Mya (age 7) in Manhattan, but will pack up and ship out this coming June! We plan to live long-term in France and raise Mya as my siblings and I were raised: ex-pats. We want Mya to attend French schools so she can learn the language and culture. I am a French speaker (a little rusty) but my daughter Jessica is not. So she’ll enroll in an intensive French language course, which is the main reason we want to find a place easily accessible to Montpellier. I have close friends in the area (Gignac and Pezenas) and a step-son in Nice. We are excited about our big move, and plan eventually to buy a house with a garden. We’ll return to the States and England for visits on a regular basis, as Mya’s school schedule allows.

Université Montpellier
Comments: Any village in 10-mile radius with easy bus / tram access to Montpellier. Need family-friendly house / flat and neighborhood
Comments: Most important is that the place be suitable for an eight-year-old, that the neighborhood be family-friendly and the local public schools good.
Any animal, even barn animals. We are a family of equestrians :)
Am happy to collect and forward mail.
I’m an avid gardener with long experience. I designed, planted and maintained a magnificent sloped landscape-garden in California. I miss it!
Comments: I’m a tidy house-keeper and a tidy gardener. I pride myself in leaving a space better than I found it—or at least as beautiful as it was when I got there.

English, French
Manhattan childhood. Family moved to France in 1969. Then England. Parents and siblings remained in Europe and I returned to States for graduate school (UCSC). Finished dissertation in 1997 (on 15th and 16th century English courtship lyric). Lectured at UC Santa Cruz a few years. Helped develop the Literature program at the new Pacific Collegiate School, where I chaired the department and ended up teaching for ten years. After 30 years studying, teaching, and raising kids in California, moved back to Manhattan in 2012 to teach ancient Greek history and literature at City and Country School, where I’d gone as a child in Greenwich Village. I’m retiring in June (2025) and moving to France! Taking my daughter and granddaughter (age 7) with me, as we are a family unit. Plan to settle near Montpellier. Looking to rent furnished house or flat for a year while looking to buy a place. Must be family-friendly neighborhood with good French primary school.

Comments: We are a family of three, relocating to France from NYC. Our dates are flexible to a point, but generally dictated by the school calendar as we have a child in elementary school. We do not plan to be in France during July-August.
