I am an emerita professor at UI so know Iowa City well. I took another academic position out of state in 2017, and have been returning to IC frequently over the last 3 years. A sabbatical home would be ideal for me as I am looking to move back permanently in the near future. Currently, I do not own a home in IC but did so for many years. At the time, I have rented my own home whenever I was on sabbatical so I know how important it is to have a good tenant who will take care of the house. I would take extraordinary care of your home and would be an ideal tenant. Enjoy reading, listening to music, attending theater, visiting art museum, and other cultural events in Iowa City. Quiet and reliable. Even though I am retired, I am still engaged in research/writing; look forward to joining a creative writing group and having access to UI as well as the two excellent public libraries in town. My research focuses on travel writing to Latin America and 20th century Caribbean literature and art. I am a native speaker of Spanish and am not-quite-fluent in French. Prefer to rent a furnished house, apartment, condo, or a mother-in-law unit for 3-6 months, possibly extending to a year. Beginning date flexible; early spring/summer (April-May-June 2026) or the usual rental date of August.1. Length of time also flexible. Prefer west side; ideally, close to a bus line; open to east side with proximity to public transportation. Preference to have utilities included; easier for both parties concerned. Would appreciate having a wifi connection (internet) as I am still actively working and use it every day, Would enjoy house sitting; mainly, mail duties, house-keeping, light gardening. No pets! Prefer a home with no cats, as highly allergic. At this point, I plan to bring my own car; however, depending on the house and location, I may simply rely on public transportation or use it sparingly. This is certainly not a requirement, but would enjoy having a piano in the home. I started taking lessons about a year ago and did not get very far, so this would be a good time to take it up again. I think that sums up all my qualifications and preferences! Look forward to hearing from you and to finding a suitable temporary home. Sincerely, Adriana Méndez

Comments: West side; Coralville; or near a bus route
Comments: I prefer a ground-level unit with no stairs. Open as to type of housing; prefer on the west side or near a bus route.
Comments: Highly allergic to cats. May bring my own car. Prefer not to rely on car. Public transportation highly desirable.

I am great at watering house plants as I do in my own home. Minimal garden upkeep (no weeding or mowing grass).

Comments: Flexible on the dates: starting this spring/early summer (April-May-June) or at regular date of August. 1st. Length of residence also flexible; 3-6 months, possibly a year. Important to have ground floor or an elevator. Reliable tenant.
I am an emerita professor of Spanish (Latin American & Caribbean) who loves her field and am still research-active. I have traveled widely to Europe and Latin America; spent a year in Sweden as a Fulbright Distinguished Professor of English at Uppsala University. I also spent six months in Paris as a researcher at the then Columbia University Institute for Scholars. After retirement, I still enjoy traveling abroad. I also travel frequently to Oberlin, Ohio for family visits.
